The Original Notebooks: They’re Still In Existence And Needed

When you think of the word “notebook”, what comes to mind? The compact computer perhaps? It used to mean a booklet of blank paper that one would write on. This definition went on to represent binders too. Indeed, notebooks, as we used to know them are nearly obsolete.

When ever your child brings home a supply list for their classes, one of the first things on it is a notebook. They do not mean an electronic portable desktop. They are more than likely wanting the child to use it for journal assignments throughout the year.

The changes the notebook as we see them now went through beforehand are a testament to how they used to be. They were not always so uncommon! Let’s look at why they have survived.

In the late eighties and early nineties, the notebook was being used as a merchandising vehicle. They had celebrities plastered on them, cartoons, and even movies. This trend is continuing today. The pictures are more varied though.

Photographers and artists designed specific covers for the notebook too. Mead became well-known for showcasing up and coming artists on their products. Individuals could take pictures of their favorite artist’s work with them.

There are different notebook styles. Many students like the kind that can hold more than one subject. The one subject notebook is still the most popular. If you look around the school supply or business area, you will also notice that they have evolved!

There are many other types out there. One of the newer trends is the note binder. These are alternately called hybrids by loyal users. The idea behind the note binder is to combine the ease of a notebook with the organization of a binder.

This style combines the ease of flexible binding of a notebook with the refillable ability of a binder. There are also folder pockets. This may call up memories of the biggest school supply fad of the eighties: The Trapper Keeper.

Fans of this late eighties craze can rejoice. The Trapper Keeper is resurfacing. It is a bit more sophisticated. Instead of noisy Velcro, Trappers now include snaps. This makes them less of an annoyance. This will make teachers and bosses happy.

Whether you like the new note binders, or the old fashioned notebooks, it is clear that these are still more convenient for travel than your laptop. They are not heavy, and they do not require a plug. The only thing required is a pen and a head full of ideas.
