Understanding The Xbox Kinect Console

These days, gaming is all abuzz not about cutting edge graphics and sounds, but about much deeper, more revolutionary concepts, ways to seamlessly integrate the gamer and the game, and the Xbox Kinect Console is Microsoft’s attempt at getting rid of the controller and allowing a whole new way of gaming. So what exactly is this thing? Read on and find out.

What Is This Thing?

The Xbox Kinect is a new controller concept that allows a more seamless integration of player and game than ever before. The idea is essentially controllerless control. In other words, you just stand in the middle of your living room and respond to the game, and the game does what you do. If the games deliver on the promise of the Kinect concept, then this may well be the biggest thing to hit gaming since Super Mario Bros. In the mid eighties. It’s really a step up above the Wii, which only tracks the movement of the Wiimotes, not the entire human body.

How it Began

The project began as Project Natal. When the Wii unveiled its revolutionary control scheme, Sony and Microsoft had to do something to stay in the game. Sony simply put some weak motion sensors into their controls, scrambling for some sort of response. They rushed, and the result is that almost no PS3 games actually use these motion sensors in any way whatsoever because they’re just plain not very well integrated. Microsoft, on the other hand, was smart. They decided that, rather than try to compete with a poor man’s Wiimote, they would one up the Wiimote, and hence, Project Natal was born, and after some years of development, it’s here.

How it Works

The Kinect controller will monitor the body with infrared beams, much like the Wiimote, but rather than tracking the controller, it tracks forty eight points of skeletal articulation on the human body. So if you move your left foot an inch to the left, so does your guy. If you do a handstand, so does your guy. If the games deliver, this should change gaming forever.

The question that remains is: WILL the games deliver? Look at other revolutionary ideas. The Virtual Boy, despite being real VR, went nowhere without good games. But, Microsoft is planning on selling the Kinect at a loss, they won’t even break even on the sale price. The only way for them to make their money back is with some mind blowing games.
