Differing opinions exist about the need for using registry cleaners to boost the performance of computers. Always have a good anti-virus system installed, keeping it updated at all times, and running. Don’t install and uninstall trial software. Use the disk cleanup and defragment programs regularly. With these steps in place, you will not feel the need to use registry cleaners.

If you are using Windows XP, click Start, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab and where it says “Performance”, click on the Settings button. In the Visual Effects tab select Adjust For Best Performance. What you are doing here is making Windows XP look more like Windows 98. If you would like your computer to look somewhat good and still be tuned for performance, select the Custom box, make sure that all of the other boxes are checked off, scroll down to the bottom and select “Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons”. Now select Apply and then OK.
If you are running Windows Vista just start by clicking Start in the left hand corner of your screen, right click on Computer and selecting the Properties option. On the left hand side, select the Advanced System Settings. In the advanced tab where it says Performance double click on the Settings button. Now in the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust For Best Performance. This will make your Windows Vista look more like Windows 98, but it will be faster. If you would like to keep the way that your Vista looks, and still have your computers fixed to go faster select the Custom box, make sure that everything is checked off and then select the box that says “Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons”. What is a registry cleaner and why is there such a big hype about them when people are talking about trying to make their computers faster? A registry is an area on your computer that is like a database that stores all of the configurations for your computers operating system and all of the programs and applications that are on your computer. A lot of people are surfing the internet and are download all different types of programs from many different sources. Now, this really isn’t all that big of a problem as long as the places that you are downloading your software are from trusted websites. The main problem that this article is going to discuss is what to do when these programs hang.
When a program hangs it can be really annoying not just because it tends to freeze up your entire computer but also because it will kill your level of productivity if it happens enough times throughout the day. So what’s the solution? To kill the program that is hanging (by kill I mean to stop the program from running). But why exactly does one program hang on one computer but not on another? To break it down into simpler terms, it really has to deal with your computers specifications and its own unique problems.
When a program hangs it can be really annoying not just because it tends to freeze up your entire computer but also because it will kill your level of productivity if it happens enough times throughout the day. So what’s the solution? To kill the program that is hanging (by kill I mean to stop the program from running). But why exactly does one program hang on one computer but not on another? To break it down into simpler terms, it really has to deal with your computers specifications and its own unique problems.
There are 2 different, but yet similar ways that I’m going to show you here. To start just open up your task manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc at the same time). What this will do is it will open up a window that will have a few tabs on it at the top of the screen. Now click on the tab that says “Application” and in there you will now see a list of the applications that are running with their current status. If there is an application that you think is “hanging” it will have a status that will say “Not Responding” under the area that is labled “status”. What your going to want to do now is to click on the application so that it is highlighted and at the bottom of the windows just click on the small button that says “End Task”. What this will do is it will kill the application. Now, keep in mind that if you have any unsaved work on your computer and you “end task” a program you will loose all of the unsaved data, so use this very cautiously.
Now, the second best way to kill an application is to simply right click on it when you are in the Applications tab of the Task Manager (remember Ctrl + Shift + Esc all at the same time) and click on Go To Process. This will then take you to the Process tab with the program highlighted. All you have to do now is to just right click on the program that is highlighted and click on the End Process Tree option. A bit of caution here: when you perform the End Process Tree option you are killing the program that is hanging and also the programs that are linked to it. Now, if the program that you want to kill either has unsaved work or is important you should not kill it as you might stop other programs that are linked to it from running. Keep this in mind at all times when you want to use this technique.

If you have had your computer for a while now chances are that it has slowed down and this must really frustrate you. But exactly why did it slow down? First off, that program is taking up space on your hard drive but more importantly it is most likely running in the background of your computer and using up resources that you can be using.
Just to be on the safe side, if you are not sure of what a program is or what it does, don’t remove it – your computer might actually be using it. Only remove a program if you know what it is and what it does. Here is the procedure:
For those of you using Windows XP start off by clicking the Start button, clicking on the Control Panel icon and clicking on the Add or Remove Programs. Now just wait a little while since the list has to be created (basically the mor eprograms on your computer the longer it will take to populate). All that’s left to do now is to just remove the programs that you don’t need. To do this, just click on the program that you don’t need and selecting Change/Remove and following through with the rest of the removal process.
For you Windows Vista user, start off by clicking the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, click on Control Panel and make sure that at the top left hand corner of the window that you have “Classic View” selected. Now just double click on the “Programs and Features” button (give it some time to populate your list of currently installed programs) and then just select the programs that you don’t need and at the top of the window select Uninstall to remove them. Remember to to only remove programs if you for 100% sure what they are and make sure that you don’t need them.

If you want to make your slow computer faster, then tuning your virtual memory would be a great place to start. You see, your hard drive is that place that your computer stores files like videos, picture etc… Your RAM on the other hand is the place that your computer’s programs work in. Its basically like a temporary working area. It’s a great system, but when your RAM gets full your computer has two choices: it can either tell you that you cannot open any more programs or it can find a new place to be used as the temporary working place. This is where virtual memory comes into play. Virutal memory is space on your computers hard drive that will be used the same way that your computer uses RAM
The name for this space on your hard drive is called a Paging File and is what you need to “tune” if you want to make your slow computer a bit faster. Your paging file is designed to be two different sizes that it moves in between: the Initial Size and the Maximum Size. Since these two sizes are constantly changing it causes your paging file to work inefficiently. All you have to do is to just make your paging file the same size and it will help you make your slow computer faster. Here’ what to do:
For those of you using Windows XP, click on the Start button, right click on My Computer and then select the Properties option. Now click on the Advanced tab at the top and then look under the little section that says Performance. Here is where you are going to click on the Settings option. When the window appears, click on the Advanced tab and under the Virtual Memory section, click on the Change option. Now look under the part where it says “Drive [Volume Label]” and make sure that your C: is selected (it should now be highlighted blue if you have selected it). Look under the Page file size for selected drive and select Custom Size.
Under the area that says “Total page file size for all drives section”, remember the amount that says Recommended as that will be important. What ever number is recommended just type it into both boxes that say “Initial Size” and “Maximum Size”. Now click Set and then Ok. To finsih, just click Apply on the next window and then OK.
For those of you using Windows Vista, just click Start, select Control Panel and on the left hand side make sure Classic View is selected. Now double click on the System icon. Now look on the left side of the window and click on the Advanced System Settings. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the window and then under the section that says Performance select Settings. A new window should appear. Just click on the Advanced tab at the top of the screen and under the section that says “Virtual Memory” select Change. Now uncheck the box that says “Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers” and look in the area where it says “Drive [Volume Label]” to make sure that C: is selected. Now look under Page file size for selected drive and select Custom Size and where it says “Total page file size for all drives section” take not of the amount that says “Recommended” as you will be using this number. Now take whatever number it says is recommended and type that into both boxes that say “Initial Size” and “Maximum Size”. To finish just click on Set, then Ok and for the next window just click on Apply and then OK.
