The High Definition TV with its incredible technology has completely changed the way TV shows and movies looked earlier. Nonetheless, nothing can be done about one fact, and that is the quality of TV shows remains horrible. A foolish sit-com will insult your intelligence in high-def just as easily as it will in general def, if not more and this is where DVRs come in.

A DVR is a digital VCR, and is also known as a personal video recorder, or PVR whose basic function is the same as an old VCR, to record content from broadcast TV. But the DVR is much more than a VCR, it is a machine that can cut the fat from your media diet and add hours of free time to your busy week, a few minutes at a time, by making the Television viewing experience more efficient. Plus it is constantly recording what you are viewing, so you’ll be able to pause a live broadcast as if it were a recording, then come back to it later without missing a thing.

Regular models have been available since about 1999, but in the past few years they have had to be adapted to handle high definition content. Driven by a hard drive which is larger than the one which your desktop PC carries, the HD-DVR can store high def content spanning 35 hours and three hundred hours of general content. of course the fresh models have improved in other areas, too – for example the TiVo Series 3, for example, can upscale standard definition content to give it better quality, and can record 2 channels simultaneously while you watch a third.

The shortest and simplest way to obtain a HD-DVR is to take one on rent from the cable company, by paying six to ten dollars per month as rentals, but users usually are not too happy with the shortened memory storage (8 to 10 hours of high def content) as well as the difficulty in handling the accompanying hardware. The only way out of this is to get one TiVo Series 3 HD-DVR available at about 0 but is worth every penny in terms of transmission quality, memory capacity and user-friendliness.

The positive effects of employing this type of recording device are tremendous. They can easily be set to record shows of pursuit, even if you aren’t aware that they exist: for instance, the TiVo can be set to record any motion picture, on any channel, that has Clint Eastwood in it. You are relieved of scanning through the channels for endless hours and naturally you can watch Television without the ridiculous commercials, which saves so much of your time.

This could have a great effect of television advertising as recently seventy percent of admen said that with the increasing popularity of DVRs, the thirty second spots would soon become history. Even a fourth of admen are seriously contemplating replacing their Television advertising expenses with some other promotional route. With a Blu-Ray DVD player and an HD-DVR connected to your High Definition TV, you can finally fight the good fight against the tyranny of empty Television ads.

The difference between good and poor picture quality can be seen by anybody. However, it is not very easy to understand the technical issues that make a picture look good. One very important element of picture quality is contrast ratio. Other aspects are the color saturation and color accuracy, and resolution is also very important.

Contrast ratio is the ratio between the darkest and the brightest color your HDTV can produce. Obviously, the higher the contrast ratio is, the better your system is. Low contrast ratio means washed out pictures, dull images and lost details. In the recent years contrast ratio had been greatly improved. Best contrast ratios have a price premium, but technology is getting cheaper. At this time, even the low-end HDTV’s have decent contrast ratios.

Another important aspect of image quality are the black levels. Systems with poor black levels will have grayish blacks when absolute black is expected. Poor black levels can be especially annoying in dim light conditions, because in this type of light the human eye is very sensitive to dark images. Lot of users set black levels very low, to achieve absolute black. This is a mistake: by doing this, black shadow details can be lost.

High white levels are good because they help images become vivid and lively. White levels also make daytime viewing more pleasant. Again, it is not a good idea to set white levels too high, because bright highlights and details can be lost.

Color temperature, saturation and accuracy are important characteristics of the images on your display. The standard for color temperature is 6500K: this is the equivalent of daytime illumination, in other words, this is the natural light temperature. Color temperature above this is bluish, and below this is reddish. Setting the color temperature correctly is important because if there is any problem with that, every other color will be bluish or reddish.

Color saturation can be relatively easily adjusted by using the color patterns that come with calibrations discs or TV channels. Color accuracy depends on how your HDTV decodes the image data. These are pretty complicated issues. You may want to read more about this elsewhere, but if you only want to stay at beginner-level, it is enough for you to know that the decoders of your system should match the color encoding used in film production.

Grayscale and display characteristic (gamma) are also important for good color reproduction, but again, these issues are for those who want to have professional image calibration. A specialist can help you to adjust grayscale and display characteristic, or you can do it yourself, but you should do your homework first and read some serious guides about image calibration.

The latest HD resolutions provide 5 times more pixel amount compared to Standard Definition. As a result, image is not simply clearer, but there is night and day difference: the smallest detail can be noticed on the image. If you want to have the best, go for 1080 capable HDTVs.

Another notion related to resolution is percieved sharpness. This is very similar to the concept of edge contrast used in photography, and it basically means that users have the choice to make the image borders crispier. This gives the sensation of better image quality with the same resolution.
