Workmen and “do-it-yourself” types alike, probably feel that the most intimidating tool that they work with, is the extending ladder. Figures show, that extension and other leaning ladders, are the kind of ladders that pose the most risk when used, therefore, it should come as no surprise, that climbing on one can be quite frightening.
Extendible or Leaning ladders are responsible for hundreds of injuries and a few deaths each year. Extension ladders are an invaluable tool, when working up high is necessary, and although they do pose a risk, you should not see this article as a suggestion to avoid utilizing this practical work equipment.
When they are used properly they are usually quite safe. The real danger lies in the improper use of them. The fact that they have to be leaned against the wall creates a certain risk in and of itself. And when the ladders extensions will be engaged, there are safety measures that must be taken to keep the user safe.
Prior to beginning any project with your ladder, you should examine it to ensure that it is not damaged in any way. A leaning ladder that has rungs or sides(stiles) that are damaged, should not be used at all. It is also critical that anyone else who might be using this ladder, be notified of it’s unworkable condition, by either posting a sign on the ladder, or telling them.
You should ensure that the ladder is free of grease or dirt. Grease or oil covered rungs could lead to a serious fall, or even death, if you are working at extreme heights. When you climb on the ladder, you should ensure that the soles and tread of your shoes are thick; in fact boots are recommended.
For optimum safety, your ladder should be leaned at exactly 75-degrees, because if the angle is too steep it could fall over, if it is too shallow it could slip.
You should ensure that both feet of your ladder are firmly on the ground, meaning that your work area needs to be level as well as dry and clean. If your ladder is extendible, you should be certain that the fastenings are secured when it is extended.
You should never attempt to climb any ladder if you have tools in your hand – be sure to rope them up safely or wear a balanced tool belt. You should ensure that you keep three points of contact to your ladder at all times.
Take care that you do not over reach. Your feet should be planted on the same rung and you should always have at least three rungs between your feet and the top of the ladder.
Even if you don’t see any damage on your ladder, if you have any doubts about its safety or age, you should purchase a new ladder.
